Apple laptop users may experience data glitch

An obscure glitch may corrupt data on some of the latest iBook and PowerBook notebook computers when they come out of “sleep” mode.
A number of customers have posted complaints to Internet sites of problems–which Apple has confirmed–with iBook computers. Their computers go into the notebook’s version of a coma–they can’t restart the system from the low-power mode notebooks go into when they aren’t being used.
Late last week, Apple posted information on its site acknowledging the problem with some iBooks as well as the recently revised PowerBook systems.
“In rare circumstances when available memory is low, putting an iBook or PowerBook (FireWire) to sleep with this feature enabled can cause some critical file system data to get overwritten. This will result in a flashing question mark the next time the computer is started up,” Apple said in the document. Apple representatives could not be reached for comment.
“That’s nasty,” commented Dataquest analyst Chris LeTocq, who deems the possibility of having to wipe a hard disk clean severe enough that Apple should consider paying for cases where people have to take damaged computers to the shop to have their data recovered.

For those worried about the problem, LeTocq advises (as does Apple) disabling the function that preserves the computer’s memory when put into sleep mode. Unfortunately, that means any data that hasn’t been saved will vanish if the battery such as Apple M8244 Battery runs out of power, which in turn means that users must remember to save the data, he said. “What we have here is a requirement for users to change their behavior,” he said.
However, such problems haven’t been characteristic of the Apple portables, LeTocq added. “Apple is held to a higher standard,” he said
Essentially, something causes the computer to be unable to load the operating system, rendering the computer useless. The glitch appears to be related to a piece of software which is used to store the contents of memory in a file on the hard disk drive when the notebook is placed in “suspend” mode. Various comments posted at sites such as Macintouch, a widely read Macintosh-focused online publication, have indicated that the data corruption problems seem to stop after disabling the software.
Apple promises a software fix by the end of March it thinks will solve the problem.
It is unclear at this time how many users have been affected by the problem. It is the first case of a serious, though apparently rare, problem for Apple’s consumer portables, which were introduced last year to much fanfare. Since its introduction, Apple’s iBook has been a hit at home and abroad. In U.S. retail stores, the iBook topped PC Data’s top-seller list in November 1999, although it has since slipped back.
Oddly enough, news of Apple’s notebook memory glitch comes on the heels of a similar problem with Dell notebooks sold in 1999.
In Dell’s case, 200,000 to 400,000 users could experience problems “when returning from memory self-refresh mode and/or when resuming from suspend mode, potentially resulting in data loss and/or corruption,” Dell warned in a letter sent to customers. In Dell’s case, the problem stemmed from certain defective memory modules, not a software issue, as appears to be the case with Apple.
In other notebook news, Apple has also noted on its site that there are eight models of Sony digital camcorders incompatible with Apple’s Final Cut Pro video editing software on the new PowerBooks. Apple has touted these notebooks as portable movie editing studios.

Great Memory From Corsair, As Usual,
Does your Mac only have 4GB of RAM? Upgrading the memory in your system is still one of the quickest and easiest ways to boost its performance. Buying it from a memory company instead of Apple will save you TONS of money. Though, unlike high performance desktop memory, there aren’t as many distinguishing factors when considering which SODIMM to buy. Pretty much all the major manufacturers have similar stated performance specs, so why would you choose Corsair’s Mac Memory Kit over the others?

INSTALL & MEMORY TEST
Installing the Corsair Mac Memory kit in a 15-inch MacBook Pro was quick and easy, though I struggled a little bit trying to remove the modules from the plastic packaging. The memory was immediately recognized by OS X and everything ran quickly and smoothly. Rember verified the memory size, type and speed. The Corsair kit also passed memory tests with flying colors. RELIABILITY, VALUE & SUPPORT
The timing for the CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7 is 7-7-7-20, which is the same as the kits offered by the other manufacturers. So then why would you consider the Corsair memory kit over the others? The most obvious is price. The Corsair kit has a very competitive street price. Did you know that Apple charges $400 for an 8GB memory kit?!
What might be less obvious is that the Corsair kit has been tested at Apple’s compatibility lab. This ensures that the memory you buy has actually been tested to work with Apple’s products. Though I’m sure that kits by other manufacturers have been tested for compatibility, the fact that Corsair went through the trouble of testing their memory at Apple, provides extra peace of mind and tells me that Corsair is willing to go the extra mile for their customers.
Additionally, Corsair’s top notch support is always something to consider. Sure, like Corsair, many memory makers provide lifetime warranties, but how good is their support and how simple is the RMA process? If your Corsair memory goes bad, getting a replacement takes just a few short steps and their turnaround time is very reasonable. If you’re in a hurry, you can even request an advance replacement (provided that you give them a credit card #, just in case you don’t return the defective memory).
CONCLUSION
You can buy memory for your Mac from anybody, but why would you? You’d might as well get it from a company known for high-performance, reliable memory, who actually tested their memory at Apple’s lab. The 8GB Corsair Mac memory kit is a terrific value and I recommend it to anyone looking to maximize their Mac’s performance without sacrificing reliability or top notch support.

|MacBook Pro Memory Upgrade,
I’ve been looking into upgrading my MacBook Pro from 4GB to 8GB for some time. When I saw a deal on this, it was a no-brainer. When it arrived, I removed the existing memory from my laptop and replaced it with the Corsair, turned on the computer and it worked. Simple as that.

According to the Corsair website this is the correct memory for my 2009 mini and 2009 MacBook Pro. I got one kit for each. I get nothing but beeps from the mini and had to return the memory purchased for it. On the MacBook Pro memory initially tested ok, reran the AHT and got memory errors the next day.
I think Corsair is French for ‘does not work with Mac’. Actually it is a pirate. I probably wouldn’t have even tried this brand had I looked that up first.
I have a problem with the memory packaging in that there is no way to tell if it is used or a prior return. Also the memory packing requires more than acceptable force on the memory stick to pop it out without using some kind of tool to safely bend the packaging out of the way.
It may work for somebody else but I give up on this brand.
